The primary purpose of the Youth Sports and Events Coordinator position is to plan, organize, implement, oversee, and manage the operations, programs, personnel, scheduling, and training required for Cherokee Recreation's youth sports and events. This role involves collaborating with the manager and recreation team to secure sports sanctioning and host events at various levels, assisting with budgeting and staff development, and creating opportunities for youth to engage as referees or umpires, engagement, ultimately fostering an inclusive and dynamic environment for all involved. Additionally, the coordinator ensures adherence to best practices in the sports industry.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure Tribal vehicles are clean, serviced, and properly maintained to guarantee reliability for transporting groups/participants.
- Recreational Facility Operations: Assist with all activities, events, and operations of the Recreation Department and/or assigned facility, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Community Coordination and Communication: Collaborate with community groups and organizations regarding program responsibilities and duties. Answer facility phones and respond to questions. Responds to public requests, suggestions, and compliments regarding programs and recreation center facilities and operations.
- Support for Coaches and Instructors: Assist part-time and volunteer coaches and coordinators in implementing recreation programs as needed.
- Program Administration: Manage tasks related to assigned programs, including planning, scheduling, publicity, reservations, registrations, attendance tracking, and financial record-keeping.
- Policy Development: Assist in creating policies and procedures for the recreation program, focusing on quality assurance and performance improvement.
- Staff Meetings: Organize and participate in staff meetings related to all areas of responsibility.
- Equipment Procurement: Coordinate the purchase of necessary equipment for programs.
- Collaboration with EBCI Programs: Work closely with EBCI programs to provide comprehensive recreation, sports, fitness, and safety education for Tribal members.
- Year-Round Activities: Collaborate with Recreation Supervisors to plan and schedule a variety of recreational activities throughout the year.
- Resource Sharing: Partner with the Division leadership to share staff, resources, and supplies for enhanced service delivery to Tribal members.
- Youth Development: Recruit and develop coaches to provide skill development for youth, ensuring they learn valuable life and sports skills.
- Youth Sports and Event Planning: Plan, promote, and coordinate recreational and competitive youth sports on local, state, and national levels.
- Boards and Committees: Serve as EBCI President for Great Smokey Mountain Little League and Smokey Mountain Youth Football League. Serve as NAYO/NASA Board Member. Others as determined.
This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others. Responsible for the youth sports both recreational and competitive in coordination with all recreation centers and personnel. Indirect supervision in coordination with other Center Supervisors. Reports directly to the Manager - Recreation. Direct supervision of 1 to 14 employees only during events, not day to day.
Experience: Five (5) years of related experience required. Experience to include three (3) years in program budget management, supervision of personnel, recreation services, marketing of services, and sports related activities.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Sports Management of in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may
be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with an Associate’s Degree or 5 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Must obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid.
