WTP Operator
Description

Performs various duties in the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and related facilities to produce potable water in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible in compliance with all local, state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and permits.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors control panel and other equipment and systems for such as filter feed rates, water flows, pump performance, distribution pressure, filter flow rates, water storage tank levels, and other data, and determines need for further action.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance and repair functions on the equipment of the WTP, the related lab and the raw water intake facilities which include pump repair/ replacement, changing chlorine line filters, repairing meters and circuit boards, and greasing and lubricating pumps and motors.
  • Performs start up and shut down procedures to WTP systems which include starting the bicarbonate machine, water-flow to lab, calibrating turbidimeters and PH machines, flushing clarifiers, and fillers etc.
  • Monitors system readings, monitors levels of specified chemicals, refills storage bin as needed, and maintains records of a variety of WTP in daily logs to include completing operator round sheets.
  • Makes visual inspection rounds of plant to ensure proper operation of all systems on a regularly scheduled sequence.
  • Responsible for training, cross-training, and safety.
  • Conducts WTP tours and greets visitors as required and collects water samples from system as required.
  • Performs stand by duties as required by supervisor and is on call to respond to emergencies.
  • Communicates with other WTP employees via two-way radio.
  • Participates in safety and other training programs and answers phone after hours and holidays.
  • Runs errands for the department as needed such as picking up parts/equipment, water samples, etc.
  • Performs general maintenance to WTP buildings as required and keeps supervisor informed of WTP systems operation and unusual circumstances.
  • Performs job duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal policies.
Scope of Supervision

This position is not responsible for supervising others. This position is supervised by program leadership.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of related experience required. Experience to include training in math, chemistry and biology and some experience in mechanical work.

Education: High School Diploma/GED equivalent required. Must obtain a level "C" certification as a Treatment Facility Operator within two years of the hire date.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
