Heavy Equipment Operator - Saw Man
Description

Performs various operations and procedures in the construction, repair and demolition of old and dilapidated buildings and removal of trees and brush, in the most efficient and cost-effective manner possible. Complies with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, ordinances, policies and permits. Operates all heavy equipment needed for use in the department.

Responsibilities
  • Meets with supervisors and coworkers to review/discuss projects, work orders, review instruction and job assignments.
  • Prepares for job assignment by reviewing work orders, researching map and related documents, engineering prints, schematic maps and/or project files.
  • Obtains supplies, materials, and equipment necessary for the job from the warehouse based on geographic location and severity/scope of job (i.e., distribution apparatus such as construction equipment such as backhoes, air compressor, chainsaw, bucket truck, chipper and track hoe, etc.).
  • Checks personal safety/protective devices to ensure safe operation and proper working order.
  • Performs pre-use check of equipment, which includes checking oil, belts, chains, and visual inspection of equipment to ensure that it is safe to operate.
  • Prepares job site to ensure compliance to safety and traffic regulations. Sets up traffic warning signs, barricades, and re-routes traffic as needed.
  • Dresses out with appropriate safety gear such as safety vest, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses and hearing protection prior to the start of the project.
  • Performs a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair duties such as: cutting trees, brush grinding, structure demolition, building and repairing dumpster sites.
  • Assists customers with a variety of service-related inquiries, investigates customer complaints and problems and takes appropriate action to resolve them within departmental guidelines.
  • Operates excavator and backhoe to dig necessary trenches and holes, refills dirt and assist with lifting and moving heavy pieces of equipment.
  • Operates bulldozer when necessary to move equipment and dirt or landscape area when work is needed.
  • Operates dump truck non CDL when necessary to haul dirt or gravel when needed as well as performs final clean up, grounds maintenance and landscaping duties.
  • Completes necessary work order documentation (i.e., project performed, materials used, time, and list of any specifies job).
  • Participates in training and safety programs.
  • Gives instructions and oversees the site crew in the absence of other supervision as requested.
  • Completes "competent person" and related OSHA safety certifications as required.
  • Performs stand-by duties as required by supervisor and is on call to respond to emergencies as well as assists and provides back up for other departments as required.
  • Performs job duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal policies.
Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of related experience required.

Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional 1 year.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
