Developmental Specialist
Description

Provides support and guidance to teaching staff who have children who are exhibiting severe and/or numerous inappropriate behavior incidents. Responsible for responding rapidly to staff request and providing direct models and techniques on how to intervene with children. Assist staff and work with families to develop behavioral plans and to locate other resources within the community. Responsible for making referrals to mental health professionals as identified. Provides support and guidance to teaching staff in the form of training and techniques with all appropriate services, training, and resources. Assist Education Service Area as it relates to classroom involvement.

Responsibilities
  • Mobilizes community resources for providing services to children with behavioral concerns and disabilities.
  • Must have a strong background in early childhood education and child development.
  • Works with teachers and parents to develop behavioral plans and monitors established plan.
  • Provides support to children in distress, and assists classroom staff with intervention techniques as needed.
  • Participates in the process for identification, referral, placement and service provision to children with behavioral concerns and disabilities according to all applicable Federal and State laws
  • Provides strategies for educational activities and parent activities for ensuring inclusion of individuals with behavioral concerns in program activities.
  • Attends Individual Education Planning (IEP) meetings for children with disabilities
  • Maintains proper documentation, tracking and input of data within the child care data base.
  • Tracks behavioral statistics and data regarding external factors as they relate to behavioral issues and concerns of children within the community.
  • Assists staff with curriculum and individual planning for children with behavioral plans and disabilities.
  • Networks with area mental health, behavioral, and disability service providers within the community.
  • Assists with development of MOU/MOA.
  • Participates in Community Assessment Plan and development of disabilities and behavioral services plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Other duties may include classroom coverage and bus monitoring.
  • Performs duties according to established safety procedures and Tribal policy.
  • Must complete an annual physical.
Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: Three (3) years of related experience required. Experience in early childhood and working with children ages birth to five.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Proof of vaccination status is required by Head Start Performance standards.
