Patrol Cadet
Description

The purpose of a Patrol Officer Cadet is to study and successfully complete Basic Recruit
Academy curriculum and successfully complete the North Carolina Police Officer Physical
Ability Test (POPAT). Upon graduation the Cadet will be promoted to a role as a sworn patrol
officer for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

Responsibilities

Position requirements consists of attending a 2-week CIPD Orientation, a 20-week Police
Academy, and an approximately 16-week Field Training Evaluation Program. Those selected for hire will receive $18 per hour for a total of 80 hours biweekly. This is a trainee classification for employees attending basic law enforcement training (BLET). Employee may progress to the Patrol Officer classification upon successful completion of BLET and attainment of law
enforcement officer certification from the North Carolina Training & Standards Division.
A cadet who attends such an approved training program at the expense of an employing
agency must remain in the employment or appointment of such employing agency for a
period of not less than 2 years after graduation from the basic recruit training program. If
employee is dismissed and/or fails to complete the Basic Law Enforcement Training for any
reason he or she shall reimburse the employing agency for the full cost of his or her tuition,
other course expenses, and wages incurred.

Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Must be twenty (20) years and six (6) months of age at the time of application, and 21 years of
age prior to the completion of the police academy.

Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.

Licenses & Certifications: Must be able to pass a background check. Must have an active insurable NC Driver’s license.

Key Job Knowledge

Cadet applicants who successfully complete the written exam, background investigation,
medical exam must successfully demonstrate physical readiness by completing a series of
assessments which consists of the following:
1. Vertical Jump
2. One (1) Repetition Max (RM)- Bench Press
3. Agility Run
4. 300 Meter Run
5. Maximum Push-Ups
6. 1.5 Mile Run/Walk
