Repairs and maintains specified departmental vehicles making independent judgments to determine the nature of trouble and extent of repairs or needed preventative procedures to ensure optimum performance and longevity. Repairs which are deemed to be beyond the capabilities of the shop are referred to the Lead Mechanic.
- • Receives job assignments from the supervisor, who provides job guidelines and priorities for work.
- Selects proper tools, references, and procedures for repair shop.
- Wears protective safety gear as required (i.e., steel toe shoes, gloves, welding goggles, safety glasses etc.).
- Orders necessary parts needed to accomplish work utilizing program policies and procedures.
- Repairs and maintains gasoline and diesel engine vehicles and equipment including heavy equipment, trucks, police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and other supporting equipment used in all aspects of Tribal services. Typical duties include:
- Performs routine inspections of safety systems including lights, tires, exhaust, horns, wipers, etc. Repairs, adjusts, or makes replacements as needed.
- Performs tune ups, electrical system repair, transmission (automatic and non- automatic) and differential repair, clutch repair, hydraulic system repair.
- Repairs of broken or damaged parts as well as simple fabrication of braces, reinforcement struts and similar non-critical non-machined components.
- Performs routine vehicle maintenance including complete lubrication, change of oil and oil filters, fuel filters, adding or replacing all vehicle fluids.
- Repairs of light and heavy equipment both in the field and in the shop environment.
- Assists in the changing of tires and track repair on crawler equipped machinery.
- Test drives or accompanies operator to ensure proper functioning of the vehicle/equipment after repairs are complete.
- Documents service sheets including parts used, labor expended, etc., and places them in the appropriate maintenance record.
- Maintains an orderly work area and participates in general housekeeping duties as required.
Participates in safety and training programs. - Performs all duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal policies.
This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.
Experience: Experience to include 1 year working as a mechanic.
Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
