Supervisor - Speaker Services
Description

The Speaker Services Supervisor is responsible for the coordination and oversight of speaker-focused initiatives, including the Speakers Gathering, Speakers Consortium, and Speakers’ Council. This role supports the revitalization and preservation of the Cherokee language by managing language services such as instruction, translation, documentation, and community outreach. The Supervisor leads a team of language instructors and fluent speakers ensuring that all activities align with the cultural, educational, and strategic goals of the program. This position requires fostering a collaborative, respectful, and culturally grounded environment that honors the expertise and contributions of fluent speakers.
In addition, the Supervisor is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the contract workforce of fluent speakers, ensuring appropriate support and resources are provided. The Supervisor also serves as an advocate for this valued and often vulnerable population, working to address their needs and promote sustainable solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day operations of the speaker services, including community curriculum development, language instruction, translation, and community outreach initiatives.
  • Develop and implement strategies for increasing language fluency, literacy, and cultural understanding within the community.
  • Oversee language assessment programs to monitor the progress and proficiency of community language learners.
  • Provide ongoing training, professional development, and mentoring to staff to ensure they are equipped to support language revitalization goals.
  • Foster a positive and culturally respectful work environment that values collaboration and community input.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community members, elders, and language experts to ensure the program reflects the needs and values of the community.
  • Organize language activities, cultural events, and workshops to promote language use and appreciation.
  • Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to expand language services and raise awareness about the importance of language preservation.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of community language curriculum and materials that are culturally appropriate, linguistically accurate, and engaging for all age groups.
  • Ensure the use of traditional language practices alongside modern educational methods for effective language learning.
  • Conduct regular assessments of community language programs to evaluate effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.
  • Maintain accurate records of program activities, budgets, and outcomes.
  • Prepare and submit reports to leadership regarding program progress, challenges, and recommendations.
  • Work closely with cultural leaders and elderly to ensure that language services are integrated with cultural preservation efforts.
  • Promote the understanding and importance of language as a fundamental component of cultural identity.
Scope of Supervision

Provide direct supervision to the curriculum and instruction staff and curriculum teams. Provides guidance to teaching staff, college and high school interns and coordinates the activities of the curriculum team. This position is supervised by program leadership.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience:Must be at a beginner to intermediate level of Cherokee language proficiency.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. The incumbent must submit to a criminal records check and be certified to work with children by the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Criminal Records Unit.
