Description

Administers the North Carolina Arts Education Essential Standards to provide a comprehensive framework for each of the arts disciplines (dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts) for students at New Kituwah Academy Kindergarten through Middle School. Teaches individuals or groups instrumental or vocal music in public or private school: Plans daily classroom work based on teaching outline prepared for course of study to meet curriculum requirements. Evaluates students' interests, aptitudes, temperament, and individual characteristics to determine suitable instrument for beginner. Provides art instruction and appreciation for all elementary students. Teacher - Art develops all lesson plans for both music and art education that meet the Common Core standards. Schedules performances and activities for parent involvement.

Responsibilities
  • Ensures students understand human experiences, both past and present.
  • Establish an environment where teamwork and collaboration help all students achieve success.
  • Assist students in making decisions creatively and solving problems, when no prescribed answers exist.
  • Lead students in adapting to and respecting others' diverse ways of thinking, working, and expressing themselves.
  • Teach the understanding the influence of the arts and their power to create and reflect cultures.
  • Students should learn to analyze nonverbal communication, and making informed judgments about products and issues.
  • Lead students to think and work creatively (creating, elaborating on, refining, and evaluating original ideas; implementing originality and inventiveness; and demonstrating openness and responsiveness to new and diverse perspectives.
  • Demonstrate how to implement innovations and acting on creative ideas.
  • Demonstrate reasoning, making judgments and decisions, and solving problems in both conventional and innovative ways.
  • Instruct students on effective communication in a variety of forms and contexts and for a range of purposes.
  • Encourage students to collaborate effectively, respectfully, and flexibly with diverse teams to accomplish a goal; assuming shared responsibility and valuing contributions of each team member.
  • Instruct students on understanding media messages, influences, creation, interpretations, and purposes.
  • Teach students to apply technology tools effectively to research, organize, evaluate, access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create, and communicate information.
  • Sings or plays instrument to demonstrate musical scales, tones, and rhythm.
  • Instructs students in music theory, harmony, score and sight reading, composition, music appreciation, and provides individual or group vocal and instrumental lessons using technical knowledge, aesthetic appreciation, and prescribed teaching techniques.
  • Conducts group rehearsals and instructs and coaches members in their individual parts, in fundamentals of musicianship, and ensemble performance.
  • Leads orchestra and choral groups in regular and special performances for school program, community activities, concerts, and festivals.
  • Critiques performance to identify errors and reinforce correct techniques.
  • Accompany students on field trips to musical performances.
  • Order, store and inventory musical instruments, music and supplies.
  • Meets with parents to review student progress, behavior issues and other student related matters.
  • Prepares progress reports and grades.
  • Attends parent-teacher conferences.
  • Attends career training in the field of arts and music.
  • Works with fluent speaker(s) to create new/contemporary music in the Cherokee language.
  • Instructs pupils in art, such as painting, sketching, designing, and sculpturing: Prepares lesson plans and establishes course goals.
  • Selects books and art supplies for courses.
  • Demonstrates method and procedure to pupils.
  • Observes and evaluates pupils' work to determine student progress or to make suggestions for improvement.
  • Confers with student, parent, and counselor to resolve student problem.
  • Schedules and accompanies students on field trips to museums or art galleries.
  • May specialize in teaching one or more areas of art, such as illustration, art history, or commercial art.
  • May direct planning and supervision of student contests and arranging of art exhibits.
  • May teach students with disabilities.
  • Ensures all lessons meet the Common Core Standards.
  • Schedules and coordinates materials for cultural arts education (basket, weaving, beadwork, etc.)
  • Schedules art exhibits for parent events.
  • Works with universities and other agencies for opportunities to participate in contests and opportunities to highlight children's work.
Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of related experience required. Experience working with elementary age children is required and 1 year working with and instructing choral groups.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required or a combination of a Cherokee Language Master Apprentice graduate or highly proficient second language learner with a proficiency of a level five or more, according to ACTFL standards.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Must possess a valid NC teaching certificate covering appropriate areas of responsibility or obtain within four (4) years. Must pass Essential Language Skills - Level 1 within 1 year of employment.
