The primary duty is to perform first line supervision of a firefighting company operating at the scene of any natural or man-made disasters including fires, rescue, EMS, and Haz-Mat scenes. Secondary duty is to supervise the activity of company personnel in quarters and non-emergency situations. Duties include maintaining discipline, submitting personnel review reports, assigning duties, conducting training sessions, maintaining reports and records.
- Implements department goals and objectives. Establishes work priorities, work schedules, and coordinates work to be accomplished per company. Responsible for daily log, emergency calls and reports, overtime and injury reports.
- Responds to alarms as an officer of a firefighting company.
- Performs a variety of fire ground functions, including Incident Command Officer.
- Responds as the officer of a medical team to bring basic or advanced emergency medical care to citizens of the community.
- Participates in daily training exercises and classroom lectures, and, at times, conducts classes for fire department shifts.
- Assists with fire investigations under supervision of the Fire Captain and Fire Marshal, supervises company inspections, assigns work projects, and approves completed work.
- Maintains discipline an insures that personnel follow department rules and regulations.
- Performs Fire and Life Safety inspections, supervises shift inspections, assigns work projects, and approves completed work.
- Performs duties as a Maintenance Officer, when assigned.
- Conducts demonstrations, tours, and public speeches on fire safety, fire prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, first aid and other subjects to the public.
- Responsible for cleanliness of stations and maintenance of apparatus, tools, equipment, and all other fire department property.
- Responds to general public complaints, requests for information and guidance, cooperates with surrounding communities in firefighting and rescue efforts.
- May be deployed on State and regional swift water search and rescue details.
- Participates in daily physical fitness.
Is responsible for company operations, methods, equipment, and personnel. Instructs, motivates, counsels, evaluates, and determines work priorities of subordinates. Directly supervises assigned shift personnel consisting of three or more employees. Works under the general supervision of the Fire Captain. Work is performed independently in accordance with departmental rules with unusual and non-routine situations being referred to the Fire Captain. Latitude for independent thinking is given in the attainment of departmental goals and objectives.
Experience: Five (5) years as a career firefighter is required.
Education: Associate’s Degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid, insurable NC CDL "Class B" required.
- North Carolina Firefighter II certificate.
- North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License or advanced level EMS License.
- North Carolina Fire Officer I Certification.
- North Carolina Qualified Firefighter Instructor 04Q0179I Certification.
- North Carolina Fire Inspector I standard Certification and North Carolina State Standard Certification.
- North Carolina Rescue Technician Certification (NFPA-1006).
- A minimum of two (2) Technical Rescuer specialty certifications (NFPA-1670).
- North Carolina Driver/Operator – Pumps (NFPA-1002).
- North Carolina Driver/Operator – Aerial (NFPA-1002).
- Completion of the following courses, as described by the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency;
- ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System,
- ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
- ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents,
- ICS-400: Advanced ICS Command and General Staff,
- ICS 700: National Incident Management System,
- ICS 800: National Response Framework, and Wildland FF S-130, S-180, and S-190.
