The Air Quality Specialist will be responsible for a variety of technical functions in the day-to-day operation of the air quality monitoring systems associated with the Natural Resources Department Air Quality Program (AQP). This includes operation and maintenance of the ambient air quality instruments located at the monitoring sites. Maintains specified records, files, and logs for reporting of activities and data. Additional specific activities are listed below under job description, which will support the air program by conducting work related to air quality on Tribal lands. The information gathered will be used to protect the health and environment of both Tribal and non- Tribal members.
- Performs technical operation and maintenance of monitoring equipment associated with the EBCI Air Quality Program.
- Attends regular trainings on Federal regulations and technical air quality issues.
- Maintain and service the current (3) ambient air monitoring sites and future sites.
- Assists the Supervisor - Air Quality Program (AQP) with installation and maintenance of monitoring systems of the AQP and ensures quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) requirements are met for program activities.
- Gathers data and submits reports to the Supervisor - AQP and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Notifies AQP Supervisor of any unusual circumstances regarding data results and/or systems malfunctions.
- Assists Supervisor - AQP and other Natural Resources staff with site investigations and data gathering for planning activities and ecosystem-based studies.
- Assists Supervisor - AQP and other Natural Resources staff with the presentation of training material for the community, youth, businesses, and other Tribal programs.
- Maintains records for all monitoring systems and processes (i.e.: PM2.5 filter data and lab info., audits, Quality Assurance Project Plans, Standard Operating Procedures).
- Performs proper handling and shipping of sampled PM2.5 filters to ensure the integrity of samples being transported to the gravimetric laboratory.
- Maintains detailed air quality instrument records (service records, calibration records, monthly checks, routine maintenance records, precision check records, etc.).
- Prepares charts and graphs for data analysis of air quality instruments.
- Performs data management, validation and submission to EPA's Air Quality Systems (AQS) for ambient monitoring data.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor - AQP or Manager - Natural Resources.
This position is not responsible for supervising others. Can directly supervise undergraduate/graduate level student interns for projects undertaken by the Natural Resources Department. Works under direct supervision of the Supervisor - Air Quality Program and follows well defined procedures and schedules for testing.
Experience: Two (2) years of related experience required. Experience in an air quality or related field along with sound knowledge of quality assurance/quality control procedures, and 1 year in compiling and analyzing air quality data and presenting scientific data both in written and oral format.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
