Supervises the Tribe's Destination Marketing efforts to support the Community and Economic Development goals and objectives to promote the advancement of the Tribe and to meet the strategic goals of the Tribe. Develops and implements a Strategic Work Plan for the Department and the Comprehensive Marketing Strategy for the Tribe that includes all advertising, public relations and promotions related to increasing visitation and travel expenditures for the Tribe.
- Develops the annual marketing and events & promotions budget.
- Holds weekly staff meetings to ensure proper communication with staff.
- Supervises any outside contractors for the DMO.
- Assists with marketing and public relations and events planning direction, counsel, strategies, and material for all Tribal entities.
- Oversees Tribal marketing and public relations strategies on regional, State, and national levels, and makes recommendations for modifications as needed to maximize successful results.
- Keeps the Secretary of Commerce informed of project operations, activities, budgetary adjustments, unusual circumstances, and appropriate communications.
- Promotes a positive Tribal reputationand support of executive leadership by responding to unusual comments and complaints by representing Tribal policies and position on issues.
- Supervises Welcome Center Supervisor, Special Events& Promotions Coordinator and Fairgrounds Supervisor, and Senior Office Administrator.
- Provides oversight of special events, promotions, ceremonies, and other activities intended to develop interest in Cherokee, NC, and the Tribe.
- Provides oversight of departmental involvement with marketing and public relations organizations, industry trade shows, FAM tours, special promotional events, and business development trips.
- Provides oversight of communication services of the Welcome Centers (i.e., 24-hour phone line, email inquiries, correspondence, and web site).
- Provides oversight of the arrangements coordinated through the department for visitors, press and travel professionals visiting the area.
- Serves on various boards Tribally, regionally, and Statewide as necessary.
- Provides destination and tourism based project management as assigned by Tribal Business Committee, Tribal Planning Board, and legislative an executive leadership.
- As a member of the Division of Commerce, work with Enterprise Development, Communications, and Project Management team to analyze potential projects and their efficacy in aligning with strategic goals.
- Supervises the Destination Marketing staff to include the coordinators of Fairgrounds, Visitor Services and Welcome Centers, Special Events, contracted agents, partnerships and other staff.
- Development of grants for funding of Tribal projects when needed when marketing, public relations and eco-tourism, and destination tourism grant opportunities become available.
- Oversees the preparation of contracts with publishers, advertising agencies and other entities.
- Provides oversight in the arrangements coordinated through the department for visitors, press and travel professionals visiting the area.
- Maintains all departmental reports, record files, and logs as required.
- Performs all duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal polices.
- Performs other duties as required as requested by the Secretary of Commerce.
- In the event of an emergency or identified immediate need, as determined by the Principal Chief or Vice Chief, participation in preparedness and response operations will be expected. Employee may be required to fill a temporary assignment in a role different from standard duties, work hours and/or work location in preparation for, during and after the emergency/identified need. Employee may also be required to participate in relevant exercises and regular preparedness training.
Provides oversight of all employees in the department and day-to-day operations. Supervises the Destination Marketing staff to include the coordinators of the Fairgrounds, Welcome Centers, Events & Promotions, partnerships, contracted agents, and other staff. Reports to the Secretary of Commerce and follows well defined procedures and guidelines as prescribed by Tribal policies and the strategic marketing plan.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience required in upper level marketing or events & promotions, as well as supervising or managing others Three (3) years of supervisory experience required.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.
