Assists the Assistant Chief of Police in all areas of the investigation division operations, activities, and investigation personnel within trust properties in accordance with established guidelines Strives to provide good police relations and reduce crime through education and community support.
- This position performs all responsibilities incumbent upon a sworn law enforcement officer.
- Assists with the planning, staffing, coordination, and direction of Investigations on training and maintaining the policies and procedures, within the department. Ensures efficient, cost effective, and comprehensive quality service.
- Assists in the development and administration of departmental policies and procedures, and carries out details.
- Conducts officer evaluations as prescribed by Tribal policy and departmental policy.
- Conducts briefings and roll call at the beginning of watch, prepares and distributes assignments in accordance with applicable guidelines and procedures (e.g. overtime, leave, etc.).
- Instructs, motivates, trains, develops, and supervises the work of police officers and other pertinent staff on assigned watch.
- Works with Drug Task Force when necessary.
- Oversees all overtime activity encountered by Officers under their supervision.
- Attends professional meetings and seminars and promotes the same for subordinates, as requested.
- Stays abreast of rapidly changing law enforcement technologies and assists with determination of what future changes should be incorporated into the CIPD.
- Assists in ensuring departmental compliance with all Tribal, State and Federal laws.
- Assists in ensuring all departmental personnel abide by the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
- Assists Chief of Police, Lieutenants and Sergeants in maintaining the levels of organizational authority.
- Assists Chief of Police in writing new policies and procedures for the CIPD.
- Ensures daily activity reports and weekly reports are forwarded to the Chief of Police.
- Ensures every Officer gets a physical fitness evaluation once every twelve months.
- Assists Chief of Police in administering disciplinary actions as prescribed by the CIPD Manual and Personnel Policy.
- Provides oversight to all subordinate supervisors to ensure that officers are properly equipped and trained to complete the tasks assigned.
- Oversees subordinate supervisors to ensure the workloads being assigned to Officers are manageable and complete.
- Performs all duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal policy, along with CIPD policies and procedure.
- Will be required to work varied hours and shifts including but not limited to days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and rotating on-call schedule to include being on call 24/7.
Directly supervises all subordinate investigators and other investigation division personnel. Works under the general direction of the Assistant Chief of Police. Work is performed independently in accordance with Tribal guidelines, with only unusual or non-routine situations being referred to the Chief of Police. Latitude for independent thinking is given in the attainment of departmental goals and objectives.
Experience: Experience as a sworn law enforcement officer for 10 years is required. Minimum of 5 years working in an Investigations/Detective Division, and a minimum of 5 years of supervision in law enforcement (excludes Detective Sergeant employment).
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with an Associate’s Degree.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Must be at least 21 years of age. Must possess a NC Basic Law Enforcement Training Certification and CPR/First Aid Certification. Must pass the firearms qualification with a score of 90 or above. Must pass a physical examination and pyschological evaluation within 30 days of hire. Must be in good standing and remain certifiable with the North Carolina Law Enforcement Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. Must be able to pass a background and be eligible to receive and maintain an adjudication by a certified adjudicator.
