Cannery Operations Coordinator
Description

Primary role is the operation of the Tribal cannery. Performs various job functions within Cooperative Extension including assistance with planning, implementing, and evaluating Extension programs primarily in the area of Food Preservation. Assists with Tribal and Extension administrative and programmatic functions. Develop food safety operations manual for cannery. Seek funding sources to maintain and expand cannery services and operations.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the tribal cannery, maintain financial transactional records; oversee assistants, interns, and clientele using facilities; provide basic canning and food safety workshops.
  • Assist with implementing extension 4-H youth and agricultural programs related to food preservation.
  • Assist extension agents with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating extension programs to meet the needs of clientele.
  • Perform all aspects of food preservation including the ability to read and interpret recipes, instructions, and related materials.
  • Must acquire or hold a certification in food safety management and implementation and must keep accurate records.
  • Assist with the development of a resource library.
  • Will be required to train staff and assist with food safety certification(s) acquisition(s).
  • Develop and annually update Standard Operating Procedures manual for cannery.
  • Develop and maintain food safety operations plan for cannery facility.
  • Maintain effective communication with the Cooperative Extension advisory council.
  • Develop a plan of work, plan of action, and evaluation of programs as appropriate.
  • Must have a valid NC driver’s license access to a vehicle for use during work.
  • Must be willing to participate and travel to training activities.
  • Must be available to meet the needs of the community; possible evening hours and weekend events participation required when necessary.
Scope of Supervision

Provide direct supervision to Cannery Assistant, volunteers, and community partners. Direct supervision will be primarily received from the Supervisor - Cannery Operations. Director may request Cannery Operations Supervisor to assist with program administrative duties.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of related experience required.

Education: High School Diploma or GED Equivalent required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional 1 year.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required.

Key Job Knowledge
  • Must have knowledge of Food Safety, Food Preservation, and Sanitation practices.
  • Must possess knowledge and ability to seek and maintain essential existing and new food safety certifications for self, staff, and facility.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with clientele and coworkers.
  • Must have good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Must have the ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines.
  • Must have knowledge of the community and surrounding areas and be willing to travel to all areas of the Cherokee Qualla Boundary and tribal trust lands to present on program.
  • Must have bookkeeping, bill paying, clerical, and computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs, email, and internet.
  • Experience, and on the job, training will be an integral part of this position.
  • Knowledge of the communities, community members, and cultural practices is essential.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Must be able to target and pursue relevant funding opportunity to maintain and expand services.
  • Must possess mastery comprehension of food preservation methods and food safety best management practices to guarantee a quality certified product.
