The primary duty of this position is to perform in the capacity of a Fire Training Officer and to assist the Assistant Fire Chief in oversight of the Fire Department Delivery Agency & Public Education Program. The position will be one of the primary points of contact for all officials relative to the fire training delivery agency and public education functions. The position will be involved in oversight for the education/ training of the firefighters, internal and tracel training, and the public education in all areas served by the Fire Department. This position will be responsible for High level fire, rescue, ems training for the firefighters, and documentation and certification filing and renewal for the department. This position will be responsible for quality public education, fire safety, car seat safety, and the smoke detector program and the paperwork retention that goes with it. This position will act as the department training officer.
- Support department goals, objectives and mission through a comprehensive Delivery Agency/ Fire, rescue and ems training program and public education program and public education program.
- Remain current with fire, rescue, ems and public education training standards by attending workshops/seminars or by means of professional publications and journals.
- Provide assistance in overseeing the department's mandated fire, rescue, and ems training program and have ready all documentation necessary for the audits that may be performed.
- Protect the integrity of the delivery agency. Have documentation filed and ready for any internal audits, external audits, and ISO inspections
- Responsible for conducting, coordinating, scheduling, proctoring all new and continuing education for the firefighters of the EBCI.
- Maintains the department provider registry through the department of transportation CDL training site administration.
- Serves as school director for department delivery agency.
- Schedules and conducts department training classes and maintains training records.
- Coordinates drills and training sessions as prescribed or needed for department personnel.
- Assists in development of standard operating procedures related to fire prevention, fire inspections and public education.
- May be detailed to provide direction and to perform public education assignments.
- Must comply with the requirements of the Cherokee Fire & Rescue Department Rules and Regulations.
This position may be responsible for supervising others. Position reports to Assistant Fire Chief.
Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a Firefighter is required with three of those being at Cherokee Fire & Rescue. Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a fire instructor.
Education: Associate’s Degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid, insurable NC CDL "Class B" required.
- North Carolina Firefighter II certificate.
- North Carolina Fire Officer II State Certification (NFPA-1021) or IFSAC accredited Certification.
- Qualified North Carolina Fire Training Instructor III State Certification (NFPA-1041).
- NC Fire and Life Safety Educator III within two (2) years.
- North Carolina Fire Inspection I Standard Certification (NFPA-1031).
- North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License or higher.
- North Carolina Rescue Technician Certification (NFPA-1006).
- A minimum of three (3) Technical Rescuer specialty certifications (NFPA-1670).
- North Carolina Driver/Operator – Pumps (NFPA-1002).
- North Carolina Driver/Operator – Aerial (NFPA-1002).
- Completion of the following courses, as described by the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency;
- ICS-100: Introduction to the Incident Command System,
- ICS-200: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents,
- ICS-300: Intermediate ICS for Expanding Incidents,
- ICS-400: Advanced ICS Command and General Staff,
- ICS 700: National Incident Management System,
- ICS 800: National Response Framework, and
- Wildland FF S-130, S-180, and S-190.
- School Director Certification within six months of hire.
