Description

Develops, implements, coordinates, and supervises various recreation programs and special activities of the Cherokee Life Program to enhance the quality of life, provide healthful activities, and opportunities for the EBCI participants.

Responsibilities
  • Plans, organizes, and supervises various general and special recreational programs and activities based on departmental goals and objectives, standard program structures, and community interests/needs, etc.
  • Oversees all activities/operations of the assigned recreational facility to ensure policies, procedures, rules, and regulations are followed.
  • Coordinates facility activities with various community groups and organizations with regard to program responsibilities and duties.
  • Assists with the recruitment and selection of part time and volunteer coaches, instructors, coordinators, and specialists to carry out recreation programs.
  • Performs all duties and tasks related to each assigned program to include planning, scheduling, publicity, and administrative tasks such as reservations, registrations, attendance records, fees, employee time sheets, balance of monies, and other related reports.
  • Supervises part time instructors, coaches, and program volunteers.
  • Conducts classes, serves as an instructor, and presents special programs relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Monitors levels of supplies and reorder or requisitions supplies and equipment to operate various programs, day camp, after school, etc.
  • Responds to public requests, suggestions, and complaints regarding programs and recreation center facilities/operations.
  • Prepares newspaper notices and public announcements regarding recreation programs and events.
  • Makes presentations to civic groups, clubs, organizations, etc., in support of Cherokee Life Program functions.
  • Keeps supervisor informed of recreational center operations, activities, unusual circumstance, and appropriate communications.
  • Maintains the security of the assigned facility and ensures building, and equipment are locked/unlocked as required.
  • Participates in various cleaning and maintenance procedures, such as mowing, field preparation, etc. of the Recreation Center, ball fields, playgrounds, and related facilities.
  • Assists in the various community activities within Tribal facilities, day care, senior citizens, schools, etc.
  • Promotes public interest in support of recreational activities.
  • Assists with the preparation of program budgets, monitors expenditures, and modifies programs accordingly.
  • Participates on various boards, committees, i.e., NASA, NAVO, Tribal, etc.
  • Performs office administrative tasks as required, such as schedules, time sheets, etc.
  • Performs duties according to established safety procedures and Tribal guidelines.
Scope of Supervision

Responsible for the selection, training, and supervision of employees and various volunteers. Responsible for recreation center operations, maintaining activities, budget, and security. The number of employees reporting to this position varies with the recreation center involved and with seasonal activities. Works under the general guidance of the Manager - Recreation and coordinates programs under the guidance of the Youth Sports Coordinator. Goals, objectives, policies, and procedures are well defined. Works independently and solicits help from coworkers as needed. Latitude for independent thinking is given to achieve departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: Three (3) years of related experience required. Experience to include employment in the recreation industry or related field and supervising or managing others.

Education: Associate’s Degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Required within 6 months of employment: CPR, First Aid, and BSAC - Basic School Age Care Certifications.
