Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator
Description

Assist in the development and implementation of Cherokee language lessons for youth and adult. Serve as the primary liaison with the public, answering responses regarding Cherokee culture and history. Assist in the development of language resource materials for immersion and community. Teach Cherokee classes, both online and in person. Also serves as a point of contact for the Speakers Consortium and the Speakers Gathering, assisting with the collection of new and revitalized words, insuring they are archived and an audio record maintained.

Responsibilities
  • Translate contemporary and historic documents from syllabary to English and translate contemporary and historic documents from English to syllabary.
  • Produce materials in the syllabary for publication.
  • Prepare educational materials in the Sequoyah syllabary to be used in the immersion program and area schools that provide language instruction.
  • Assist in the use and teaching of the Cherokee language in public schools upon request or in the absence of the contracted teacher.
  • Work with the electronic media coordinator to prepare audio recordings and other media needed in the Cherokee language.
  • Primarily responsible for the logging, maintenance, archiving and database entry of the new words created by the Speakers' Consortium.
  • Answer and screen phone calls, deliver messages, screen visitors to the school.
  • Attend consortium and other KPEP created groups as a facilitator when needed as well as participant.
  • Teach the Cherokee language as called upon by the Tribe and based on the needs determined by the Community Resource Supervisor.
  • Consult with the sister Tribes, sharing information and resources upon request.
  • Prepare and presents oral presentations on Cherokee history, culture and historic places for the general public, schools, and universities.
  • Attend and assists with all KPEP events.
Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: Three (3) years of related experience required.

Education: Associate’s Degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Must obtain certification in safety procedures and protocol, CPR/First Aid certification is required. Incumbent shall submit to and be certified to work with children by the NC Department Division of Child Development, Criminal Records Check Unit.
