Environmental Lab Technician
Description

Performs a wide variety of chemical, biological and other analyses of ground, surface and/or wastewater. Records results of monitoring and reports on compliance to all local, state, and federal applicable regulations and guidelines.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts various chemical, biological, and other analyses of ground, surface and/or wastewater at various stages of treatment within wastewater treatment facilities and related systems.
  • Maintains records and test results such that they can be used to prepare reports on wastewater laboratory operations and meet QA/QC requirements.
  • Regularly informs supervisor of wastewater analyses results and notifies of unusual or non-compliant circumstances.
  • Follows established schedules and procedures for lab testing to ensure QA/QC.
  • Collects samples at various points at specified stretches of stream in wastewater systems, wetlands and reservoirs.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of laboratory equipment such as autoclave, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, and various meters.
  • Operates and maintains field equipment, such as data loggers, backpack shockers, GPS units and surveying equipment
  • Transports samples as needed.
  • Collect stream samples via wading in swift water conditions.
  • Performs data analyses of water quality data and maintains water quality databases.
  • Creates maps using ARCGIS for water quality sampling points, wetland areas, and maintains digital files.
  • Prepares and submits a variety of reports and summaries to EPA, State of North Carolina, and other regulatory agencies as scheduled or instructed.
  • Participates in field work, sometimes strenuous, collecting water quality data, biological data or wetland data.
  • Maintains a sterile work environment and performs housekeeping duties as required.
  • Performs job duties according to established safety guidelines and Tribal policies.
Scope of Supervision

This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.

Minimum Mandatory Qualifications

Experience: One (1) year of related experience required. Experience in applying the principles of chemistry and biology in an employment setting, or related field.

Education: Associate’s Degree in related field required.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid, insurable NC Driver’s License required. Must obtain Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification within two (2) years of date of hire.
