The Cherokee Indian Police Department Victim Advocate provides critical technical and operational support to victims of crimes, CIPD sworn officers, and the criminal justice system. The Victim Advocate assists victims of crime by providing a full range of services, including but not limited to crisis intervention, court support case status updates, community referrals, and community education.
- Initiate contact with victims of crimes of a violent and/or sexual nature; advise crime victims of their rights and assist them in navigating through the criminal justice system.
- Review police department incident reports, contact victims of crime in which a suspect has been arrested to ascertain what assistance may be provided by the Police Department, provide crisis intervention and emergency assistance, conduct an immediate needs assessment, and provide information and referrals to other agencies and community services.
- Assist victims with completing and processing forms, including those related to Victims’ Rights and restitution.
- Provide ongoing emotional support, encouragement, and information to victims as the case moves through the criminal justice system; provide support during court proceedings, as needed; update victims regarding the ongoing status of criminal proceedings.
- Confer with law enforcement officials on the status of cases; coordinate interviews between investigating officers and victims; and provide support to victims and their families during interviews with law enforcement, attorneys, and other court personnel.
- Work closely with the Office of the Tribal Prosecutor as well as State and Federal prosecutors to help establish and nurture relationships with victims and to assist in trial coordination and preparation.
- Collect data and maintain reports as needed to support multidisciplinary team meetings and grant projects.
- Utilize computerized data entry software and equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet, database and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information as appropriate and/or necessary.
- Initiate and maintain case logs, document case activities, and maintain files.
- Perform routine administrative duties, including preparing mailings and correspondence; file all appropriate forms and reports.
- Represent the Police Department at public education classes.
- Respond to inquiries from internal and external personnel and prepares a variety of correspondence, reports, and records.
- Compile, record and provide internal and external reports.
- Testify in Tribal, State, or Federal Court when appropriate.
- Maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and other law enforcement agencies.
- Work independently and as part of a team, manage time effectively, and handle multiple tasks with time-sensitive deadlines.
This position is supervised by program leadership. This position is not responsible for supervising others.
Experience: One (1) year experience is required.
Education: Associate degree in related field required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be in lieu of degree, with required related experience of an additional: 3 years with a High School Diploma/GED equivalent.
Licenses & Certifications: Valid insurable NC driver’s license. Must pass a written exam and practical exam to be conducted by CIPD or its designee.
